Day 2 Recap: Clausen finally gets drafted and the Pats dominate again…

Saturday, April 24th, 2010

Will: Time to get serious folks. I know Goodell is trying to bring in the casual fans by making a prime time spectacle out of the draft, but the foundations of great franchises are built after the first round (and there are enough casual fans in New England alone to meet the league quota). Is it a tad pretentious to say that I have watched every round of every draft since I have 7 years old, or just pathetic? Either way, the 2010 draft saw some huge moves in the 2nd and 3rd rounds and here is my breakdown of the evening’s action.

New England Does it Again- There are a few things that we have come to expect in the draft; the Raiders are going to embarrass themselves, Jacksonville will take a pass-rusher in the first round (really working out for ya Jack?), and the Pats are going to move back and dominate the middle rounds. Don’t get me wrong, I hate the Pats, but you cant help but admire the way these guys can maneuver around the second and third round to get who they want. Rob Gronkowski is the most complete tight end to come out since Heath Miller and he will create a ton of options for the New England offense in there passing attack and maybe they will finally take some pressure off of Brady and run the ball. Throw in a solid MLB in Brandon Spikes and a possible 5 tech in Jermaine Cunningham and you have the best second round in the league. Oh and just for good measure, they add Ohio speed demon Taylor Price who reminds me of Steelers WR Mike Wallace, and we all saw the impact he had. Not to mention they added another 2nd round pick for next year, already giving them 4 picks in the first 2 rounds of next years draft.  I hate you Patriots, but damn you are good!

The Ravens’ have a Wizard- I have a ton of respect for Ozzie Newsome and what he has done with the Ravens organization. If you want an example of what the Wizard gets done, consider this. After bringing in Boldin and Stallworth, completely transforming the Ravens’ passing attack, Oz puts together the best collection of defensive picks in the 2nd and fill a need in the 3rd. Sergio Kindle and Mount Cody will get time next season and with some development should be starters withing two season, and TE Ed Dickson gets down the field in the seams and has the tenacity to turn into a solid blocker after a season in the weight room. My heart says the Steelers will hold down the AFC North yet again, but my head knows that the Ravens are a step ahead.

Great Fits- Golden Tate will preform in Seattle in the slot and as a return specialist, but I still have no idea who is going to get him the ball.

- The Vikings picked up a stud in Toby Gerhart that will make an interesting compliment to “All Day” Peterson; inside power vs outside power…I love it! Give them boys the rock and let em roll!

- Jimmy Clausen is the best QB in this draft, and now he has a chip on his shoulder because Tim Tebow went in front of him. With Steve Smith and one of the best rushing attacks in the league supporting him, this kid is going to have a great big “go f*ck yourself” ready for every other team that passed on him.

- The Bears did a great job here with… oh yeah, NOTHING. Look for Lovie Smith on NFL Live next year or Total access just like Mora Jr.

A brand new reason to hate the Jets…They’re actually good?

Will: New York Jets Round 1; Pick 29 – Terrance Cody, NT Bama

I just cannot understand where the Jets get the balls turning into a legitimate team. This is bullshit. Dumb fans, half a stadium (still called Giants Stadium by the way), and now you have the nerve to be good? Shenanigans I say (grab your broom).

That being said, Chris Jenkins is 30 years old, expensive, and the Jets are clearly building for the future. Terrence Cody is a huge value at pick 29 when you consider that if it wasn’t for a months worth of Sonic, this guy would be a top ten pick. I don’t care who is there now, if you are a 3/4 team, you need to have as many nose tackles as you can find. Having him play behind Jenkins is the best thing for both of these guys. You extend Jenkins or at least increase his trade value, and you take a ton (literally) of pressure off of Cody as he learns how to become a pro.

Jay: The Jets have had one of the best off-seasons I have ever seen. They needed a rush LB/DE and they signed Jason Taylor. They needed someone to fill the shoes of Thomas Jones, insert LT. They needed a slot receiver…they traded for Santonio Holmes (a complete steal in my opinion). Not to mention they signed CB Antonio Cromartie who is now paired with the best CB in the NFL. You got to hand it to the Jets front office for a great off-season.

I think you nailed it Will. Jenkins is old and they could really use a fresh NT. I have them picking NT Linval Joseph from East Carolina. I think he is a very comparable player to Cody. Both can jam up the middle and take on blocks in order to let the linebackers run free. Look for the Jets to add another piece to their already loaded defense.

How the (AFC) West was won…

Jay: I think the Chargers did the right thing by getting rid of LT. He wasn’t the player he was a few years ago. I still think he would have been able to help them but not for the money he was going to get. It was a smart “business” move. With that being said, the easy position to draft is RB but I’m not going that way. Phillip Rivers is now an elite QB and San Diego throws the ball a ton. I’m going to say they draft DT Terrence Cody from Alabama. Cody is a monster and should be a force in the NFL. The Chargers current DT Jamal Williams is 34 and is coming off of an injury that ended his season. There was a lot of speculation that Cody ate his way out of the first round but he has shed a ton of weight (349 lbs. at his pro day) and should be a late first to early second round pick.

Will: San Diego Chargers Round 1; Pick 28 Jahvid Best, RB Cal

Jay, the reason this pick seems “easy” is because IT IS. The Bolts, unlike you I guess, know that they can find any running back or DT to fill those gaps in the second and third rounds. Teams in this position tend to carry a very simple draft concept; take the best guy available at your number one need. The Chargers will take Jahvid Best from Cal and then proceed to get him some help. I think that the Chargers should grab Toby Gerhart and Doug Worthington (Buckeye NT), but they can wait on both of those players. Chargers will draft the every-down back in Best, expand Sproles’s role on third and passing downs, and if they can get Gerhart, he will replace them both within two seasons. With no one to even compete with the Chargers in their division, look for the Bolts to be back in the post season, most likely with a bye week.

With the 9th pick in the 2010 NFL draft, The future LA Bills select…

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

FWG: Let me start first by saying, I am an unabashed Bills fan. Yes, my beloved Bill-ski’s, THE premiere team of the early ’90’s. Well 11 seasons and not a playoff birth to speak of, here I am, predicting the draft, when that’s really the last thing on my mind.  I should be predicting that the team ends up in Toronto or in L.A. once old man Wilson dies, and his legacy is sold to the highest bidder.  The bottom line is, this off season, the Bills need O-line, and with the recent departure (ehem, retirement) of Brad Butler, their case is almost desperate.  But in keeping with the theme of giving up, and with the Bills moving to a 3-4 defense next year, I say screw the “needs” (like, um, a playoff game) and take a nose tackle.  With the smart money saying there are no premiere DT/NT’s left, I’m gonna go out on a limb, and say take THE fat black guy.  Terrence Cody, my 2010 NFL Draft pick for the Buffalo Bills.  God save me.

Jay: Oh FWG, it pains me to listen to Bills fans. You are correct on the idea that they need an OT. Last year they lost Jason Peters to Philly and now the retirement of Butler. If somehow Clausen or Bradford fall to them, I think they will jump at that but by no means is THE FBG going to be picked here. It is clear to me that he ate his way out of the first round. He weighed in at 370 lbs. at the SR Bowl. I know he got down to 356 lbs. at the combine but you and me both know that one weekend in Buffalo with 15 buckets of chicken wings and BOOM! 380 lb. T-Cody is back. I think the Bills should draft OT Bruce Campbell from Maryland. He is an athletic freak (At 317 lbs. he ran a 4.78 40). He should be able to help out the Bills instantly. They need to rebuild the OL because I don’t care if Jim Kelly is behind center, with no time, no QB will be successful.

UPDATE!!!

Jay: check it out… With the 9th pick in the 2010 NFL draft, The future LA Bills select… (http://fwgnfl.com/?p=557)

Chris: I almost threw up in my mouth

Jay: haha

Chris: On the other hand, Cody could stimulate the Buffalo fast food economy
