The Steelers take another big hit…

Monday, June 28th, 2010

The Pittsburgh Steelers took another big hit on Monday afternoon as their starting offensive tackle Willie Colon suffered a torn Achilles. Colon will have more tests on the injury but according to his agent, “It looks like it’s an Achilles injury. We want to wait to confirm it, but that’s kind of our worst fears.”

The Steelers think that he will need surgery to repair it, which would require 5 to 6 months of rehab. Colon’s potentially season-ending injury happened when he was doing agility drills Monday morning.

What an off-season for the Steelers… First the Big Ben debacle, then they trade their Super Bowl MVP wide receiver, and now this. Pittsburgh is surely hoping that their nightmare off-season is over…

Carson and the Bengals add an extra weapon…

Will: Cincinnati Bengals Round 1; Pick 21- Jermaine Gresham, TE Oklahoma

This is one of the few automatic picks in this year’s draft. Oklahoma’s Jermaine Gresham would have been the first TE off the board last season if he would have declared; instead he went back to the Sooners and suffered a season ending knee injury in practice before the start of the season. While he does not have top end speed, at 6’5” and 261, this guy is a pass catching monster over the middle of the field. He has good technique as a blocker, but given the spread system he ran in college, there simply isn’t enough film for me to say he can set the edge for Cedric Benson. If the Bungles are honest, they really don’t care if he can block. Carson Palmer will have a legit pass catching option at TE for the first time in his pro career and that will open up everything for the offense. Ochocinco will have the middle of the field cleared out, Bryant will have less safety help over the top, and Carson will have a big target right in the middle of the defense. Last season was a massive fluke and the Bungles are still the 3rd best team in this division, but with a talented young defensive unit and a more balanced offensive attack, the Steelers and Ravens are certainly not comfortable.

Jay: I couldn’t agree with you more. The tight end position has been non existent for the Bengals. I really liked the Bengals decision to sign Antonio Bryant over Terrell Owens in the off-season. Can you imagine the headache for Marvin Lewis if they had Ochocinco and TO? With Bryant and Ochocinco taking care of the outside of the field, Gresham will have a lot of space to work with in the middle of the field. I don’t care that he can’t block, put an extra lineman in when you are going to run the ball and let Gresham catch passes. I think he has the chance to be a Red Zone TD machine. If the Bengals pass on him, he will get picked by the Pats with the next pick (another team that needs a TE very badly). I could also see Cincy picking a DT with this pick. They have Tank Johnson, who in my mind is average at best, and depending who is still available at this pick I wouldn’t be shocked to see the Bengals add an athletic DT to their D-line.

(I know it is a little early but I’m going to give my 2010-2011 AFC North projection. 1.Ravens  2.Bengals  3.Steelers. Sorry Will and Steeler Nation)

No Charges, but Big Changes for Big Ben and Steeler Nation

I know you have come to expect a certain level of sarcasm and humor (well attempted humor) in my writing, but this story is as serious as they come. At 2:00 pm, Ocmulgee Circuit District Attorney Fred Bright announced that he would not file charges against Ben Roethlisberger for sexual assault. Bright clearly stated that the “victim” was drunk the entire night and that there was no way that he could ever charge Big Ben based on the evidence in the case. It also came out that the 20 year old co-ed that went to police after suffering minor injuries, contacted the DA’s office more then two weeks ago to insist that the case not be tried.

While Roethlisberger’s previous sexual assault charge in Nevada was a clear case of extortion, this one is a clear case of stupidity. Ben is one of the most talented players to ever line up under center and no one can ever refute his success thus far in his career, but as the face of one of the most popular and recognizable franchises in American sports, he has to realize the impact of his actions. He may be innocent, but in the court of public perception, Ben would have to plead the 5th.

Super Bowl XLIII MVP Santonio Holmes, was traded to the Jets for a 5th round pick, and it was recently released that the Steelers would have cut Tone if they could not find a trading partner. As a true fan of the game and a life-long Steelers fan, I hold the highest respect for the Rooney family. When the Rooney’s are not happy, things change quickly. Big Ben may be a Godsend to Steeler Nation, but the Rooney’s will send him packing if anything like this happens again. Ben will go onto a HOF career and win several more championships in the Steel City, if he can just grow up and assume the same leadership role off the field that he carries on it.
