Who the Hell is Charlie Whitehurst?

Seahawks fans, your team just dropped 20 slots in the second round of this years draft and shipped a 2011 third round pick to the Chargers for a third string QB who has not thrown a single pass in the regular season in four years; Are you going to Disney World, or sprawled out in the rain watching overpriced coffee poor out of your freshly sliced wrists while Nirvana blasts in the background?

Listen FWG nation, I know a lot of you really do not know who this guy is, but for whatever reason seem to be comfortable (like every douche-bag at ESPN) with the Chargers actually cashing in the third round tender they placed on this guy. So open wide baby birds, because Papa Will is going to regurgitate some knowledge into your gullets.

If you are looking for stats on this guy, you won’t find any. Like I said, he has yet to throw a pass in the NFL when it counts, but he does have two rushes, one of which went for a TD. The best way to describe this guy is Rob Johnson meets Shane Falco. He is semi-mobile, pretty good sized (6’4”, 220), and has developed under Norv Turner for the past four seasons (in a completely different system; red flag much?).

At Clemson, this guy was Joe Freaking College and put up some pretty solid numbers. He started halfway through his sophomore season on a run first Clemson team, but still impressed scouts with his arm strength and accuracy. His senior season, 2005, he racked up a 67.4% completion percentage and a 133.49 QB rating. However he only passed for 2,400 yards and his TD to INT ratio was 11-10. He was taken by the Chargers in the 2006 draft with the 81st pick and was considered by many to be the ultimate project guy. All of the physical tools, just needed to develop the decision making abilities and he would be the man.

Now I would love to tell you whether or not this guy is going to be a boom or bust pickup for the ‘Hawks, but I have no freaking clue. I tried to find film on this guy and the only thing I saw was his TD run in 06 and a bunch of cut-ups from Clemson. Maybe Norv Turner is like Tommy Boy and is selling off this guy like break-pads (David Spade is still looking for a movie job so he can play himself), but the fact is that the only guys who know anything about him are on the Chargers staff, and they aren’t saying much. Arizona, Seattle, Buffalo, and Cleveland all expressed serious interest so my assumption is that they know a hell of a lot more than me, but then again they are a gaggle of shitty second tier level teams who have yet to DRAFT a real QB since Jim Kelly. Hope this helps FWG Nation.
