Round 2: Day 1 Winners and Losers

Jay: My 2 Best…

The Lions Strike Twice

The Lions had one of, if not the best 1st round of any team. I really like what Seattle did but Detroit drafted 2 great players. With the second pick in the draft, they picked Ndamukong Suh, the DT from Nebraska. In my mind he was the best player in the draft and should really be a force from day one for the Lions. That pick is not why I think they had a great first round. Late on night one, the Lions traded back into the first round to draft RB Jahvid Best from Cal. I LOVE this pick. Best is extremely explosive and now the Lions offense looks loaded. Other than the Jets, the Lions may have had the best off-season.

Lions off-season moves

-Trade for CB Chris Houston

-Trade for DT Corey Williams

- Sign DE Kyle Vanden Bosch

- Sign WR Nate Burleson

- Trade for TE Tony Scheffler

Green Bay and Cincinnati make the simple but right pick

I think both of these teams made great picks on night one. The Bengals drafted TE Jermaine Gresham from Oklahoma. I can see Carson Palmer shedding tears of joy right now. He has never had a TE to throw to and now he gets an extremely athletic, playmaking TE. Look for Gresham to be a red zone monster. With 85 and Antonio Bryant on the outside and Gresham roaming the middle, the Bengals have what looks to be a dangerous combination of pass catchers. Look for Gresham to catch 45+ balls and 5 TDs.

I also love that Green Bay drafted OT Bryan Bulaga from Iowa. He is Green Bay. Just look at him. They needed a big time OT and he just fell into their laps. I didn’t think he would get out of the top 9 let along fall to Green Bay. The Packers must have thought their was no way they could land him and then there he was. Nice job Green Bay, you didn’t reach for Taylor Mays and you picked a stud OT.

My Big Loser(s) – Jacksonville and Jimmy Clausen

What was Jacksonville thinking last night? Tyson Alualu? with the 10th pick? I was completely stunned last night as I heard Roger Goodell announce his name. Come on Jacksonville, with the players on the board, you select Alualu? To be honest I think that they were hoping CJ Spiller was there at 10 and didn’t prepare a backup plan. To me there was a clear and easy answer…Earl Thomas from Texas. He is going to be a great safety and oh yeah Jacksonville, you need one! I have nothing against Alualu, but I just think it was a big time reach pick at 10.

The other “loser of the night” was Jimmy Clausen. I think he is going to be the best QB from this draft.  (The bad part for Clausen, he just lost a sh*t load of money) With that being said I think he and Colt McCoy will be off the board within the first 7 picks of the 2nd round. Look for Buffalo and Cleveland to make a major play at each QB. I also think that there is an outside chance that KC goes after Clausen. With so many good players left, look for tonight to be just as exciting as Day 1…

Round 1: Day 1 Winners and Losers

Will: My Best….

San Fran Buys some Bulk: While many of the experts have spent this off season breaking down Alex Smith and his chances to finally develop into a franchise QB , Mike Singletary was trying to figure out how to pound the rock and get Frank Gore another 1,500+ yard season. The 9ers hit two potential Pro Bowlers on the line with a supremely athletic Rutgers tackle in Anthony Davis and the biggest sack of potato’s in Idaho, guard Mike Iupati. Both of these guys need some work as far as their technique and footwork goes (like EVERY other 1st round pick EVER taken except Jim Brown), but they are natural athletes who are big nasty SOB’s that will get the job done for a long time to come.

Carroll’s College Cred’ Gets it Done: Let me go on record by saying that I do not think Pete Carroll will be a successful NFL head coach, again, but as the head of football operations he has certainly earned his stripes. Carroll blocked out the pressure to over compensate Denver to get Brandon Marshall, and kept a pair of 1st round picks that he used on two guys that might be the best at their respective positions in this years draft. The pick of Trent Williams by the Skins may have fit them better, but it was the best thing to ever happen to the Hawks. OSU tackle Russell Okung will replace Walter Jones and start at left tackle there for the next decade, with at least half of those ending in Pro Bowl appearances. Earl Thomas out of Texas is a prime example of the new bread of cover safeties and fills a huge need for the Hawks. Both of these guys should start opening day and have an immediate impact.

The Worst….

Sorry Josh, This is just too Easy: I asked Jay if he wanted to flip a coin over who got to shit on the Broncos, and I guess he has a secret Tim Tebow fetish, so I win by default. At this point you should all be aware of my distain for Tebow and anyone who thinks he can play quarterback in the league, so I will dispense with the tomfoolery (thanks for the expression Gramps). Many people see both Tebow and GA Tech wide out Dameryius Thomas as supremely talented, but developmental players, they both had late first to mid-second round grades. Listen, I am all for taking the best players on the board, even if you think they need work, all of these guys need work, but there is no way Josh McDaniels can ever justify these picks. Thomas, Golden Tate, and Arrelious Bell would have all been there in the second, Tebow could have made it to the third, and after making three trades in less then 30 minutes, the Broncos some how moved down with both of their first round picks, and gave away a 2nd, 3rd, and two 4th round picks. Wow…

Trent Williams is picked 4th overall

Friday, April 23rd, 2010

OT Trent Williams is picked 4th overall by the Redskins…this pick is brought to you by Teds Bar and Restaurant, the best place on UConn’s campus to grab some grub!

Trent Williams is probably the most talented lineman in the 2010 NFL draft but had some issues if he cared enough. I like the pick but think that Okung was a bit safer. They found their OT to protect McNabb.

3 for 4. Kansas City will either take Eric Berry or Russell Okung…hmm…I am going to say that they draft Berry, the talented safety from Tennessee.

Gerald McCoy to the Bucs

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

Teds Restaurant and Bar brings you the 3rd pick in the draft…The Bucs select Gerald McCoy from Oklahoma.

3 for 3. I really like this pick too. McCoy will be a great fit for the Bucs. The first three picks are done…all were locks in my mind, now this is where the draft gets interesting.

Pick 4 – Washington will pick OT Russell Okung from Oklahoma State.

BRADFORD IS NUMBER 1 PICK!

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

The St. Louis Rams select QB Sam Bradford. This pick is brought to you by Teds Restaurant and Bar.

I think this is a great pick. Suh may have been the best player in the draft but drafting a DT will not improve your team as much as a QB will. The Rams make the safe pick and go with Bradford.

The Lions will pick Ndamukong Suh, the DT from Nebraska.
