The headline that could have been…After starting 18-0, Colts now 1 win away from perfection.

How sweet would it be if we were on the verge of perfection? Yes the proverbial we, dude, the “royal we…” because as the wins start creeping up everyone becomes a Colts “team member” or “fan”. More than anything else, I wanted the Colts to go for perfection so I would never have to hear Mercury Morris talk again. The Colts had a chance to cement their place in history as “greatest team ever.” So, I really don’t want to hear Bill Polian and Jim Irsay say they did the right thing by benching their players and not going for a prefect season.

I know they both have their chests puffed out saying look at us now, we are in the super bowl, so just put it to rest. HELL NO. I’m more pissed now. This just means that they should be 18 and 0. They were winning when they laid down for the Jets and lets be serious, the Bills? (which I had tickets to that game and was so pumped I was going to see 16-0). But no, lets rest our players and not try to be the greatest team ever. Listen, Peyton Manning hasn’t missed a game since his freshman year at Tennessee. He had already played 2 and a half quarters vs. the Jets and we all know the Bills wouldn’t have come close to touching Manning. I know their goal wasn’t to go undefeated but to win the Super Bowl. I get it, but the 2009 Colts had a chance to do something special and as a fan of the game I feel cheated.

I think any fan of football, and especially any hater of the Dolphins, wanted to see the Colts go for the gold. But let’s not start making predictions that the Colts would have rolled over the Bills. A few things you didn’t take into consideration here:

    1) The weather in Buffalo that day was the worst it had been all season. The field was covered in snow which would have made things difficult for Peyton to work in
    2) The Bills had a much better running game than the Colts, and the Colts rushing defense was not great.
    3) Bills classicaly win games at the end of the year to kill their draft pick.

That said… They still probably would have lost.
