Guys, not only do you have to look at the talent on the draft board, but take a look at the moves that the Steelers have made with their own roster. Billy Gay was tagged with a 5th round tender (that means they are ready and willing to ship him out), Deshea is on the free agent market along with Kirschke and Nick Eason, and lets not forget the three year deal dropped on Big Snack Hampton. Foote is back with a 3 year deal even though Timmons proved to be a very solid player. Logical explanation is a schematic move in that they understand that their base defense will pretty much be a 2/5 or 2/4 nickle. Passing is at an all time high and all of their backers can play the run.

This means that the Back and Gold are looking for a Number 2 corner boys and girls. The depth at defensive and offensive line in this years draft is amazing, and there alot of 3 tech guys that they can move to a 5 tech (like Hood last season) that will be there in the 3rd and 4th rounds. corner and safety start to get a little thin… I actually like Donavan Warren at 18, though I can see them trying to move up to grab Haden (depending on how high they have to move)

Dont think the Steelers will move up? I know the Rooney’s like to stay put in free agency and the draft, but I think the memory of two Pitt Panthers that slipped through their fingers are still haunting them. The first of course was the epic 1983 miss on Dan Marino who they passed up for DT Gabe Rivera, and just a few seasons ago when the Jets moved one pick ahead of them and grabbed Revis.

They need to finally get someone steady across from Ike before he ages out.

No way does Seattle take a QB in round 1, wont happen. They will go OT with there 1st pick and either RB or OG with the 2nd this teams O-line is awful and Walter Jones is done. If they dont take a RB in the 1st round they will take 1 in the 2nd.

I get the impression that the Bucs don’t want to use a #3 on any safety. Also, as to Dan Williams,he is more of a nose guy & Tampa needs an under tackle.IMO the Rams will wind up taking Bradford, Detroit will select Suh, & Tampa will get McCoy & be very happy. If that doesn’t happen & the DTs are gone, I believe that there are teams that will want to deal up to #3 in order to choose Sam ahead of Washington, & the Bucs will gladly deal down.Then they may take Dez Bryant, or someone like Joe Haden or Derrick Morgan.

Frank, I agree with you on some points. I agree a CB is a position on need and if they picked a CB I would like to see them select D. Warren. I like the idea of Odrick or Graham as well but I don’t think they will take Spiller. They drafted Glen Coffee last year, so I don’t think they will draft another RB this high. There are much higher positions of need than RB. Plus, there are a lot of good RB’s that they could get in the later rounds that can add speed to the backfield (Joe McKnight from USC or Dexter McCluster from Ole Miss). In the end, they still need a safety and right now I think EARL Thomas is the best pick for them.

Trent Williams is fine as the OT pick…not so much w/Eric Thomas. Agree, he’s
an excellent S, but that’s not high on Singletary’s off-season priority list.
He’s pleased with FS Dashon Goldson’s development…and he still has SS Michael
Lewis, although there are concerns about his 3 concussions last year. However,
he has 3rd year S Reggie Smith as Lewis’ heir apparent. He could well take one
of the top CB’s, though, like Donovan Warren, Perrish Cox or even Kyle Wilson.
There are other options, too…like Spiller, who’d offer speed for the backfield
plus dramtically improving the KR game. Singletary could also go DL…with
someone like Jared Odrick, who’d be a huge DE in his 3-4 defense. Odrick’s a
beast…plays with an attitude, which they could use on SF’s DL.

that is as bland as i can get on this subject.

i do think that dan williams would be a GREAT pick for tampa bay at #3. i also think that he would fit need and talent level for jacksonville or denver at #’s 10 and11, or miami at #12.

i have no idea why you think that TN would go across country to get price, when they can get williams as an in-state talent (as they seem to have a penchant to do, note haynesworth and mahalona) at the same position. Plus, williams would give them more versitility as he has the agility and mobility to play dt in a 4-3 and the size and ability to split or demand double-teams to play nt in a 3-4. he falls no further than TN at #16.

if he does fall to pittsburg at #18, they will be appreciative and MN would love to add him as the newest brick in the williams’ wall.

with all due respect, i’m not quite sure what you mean by moderation. i just want to express my opinion that dan williams should be included in conversations involving suh and mccoy, and should be rated higher than cody, price, odrick, and the rest. Great respect has been shown to him by FL, AL, and LSU (four of the last five national champions), as well as the rest of the SEC (arguably the best conference in the country), by double- and/or triple-teaming him in every game that he has played since his red shirt freshman year. TN has had a history of unnecessarily red shirting, stockpiling, and underpublicizing some of their better talents but the previous statement speaks for itself. it is TRUE that dan has a history of making players around him better (note mayo and ayers) and that the overall ranking for TN’s team defense has been positively effected every game that big dan has started. i still think that adjusting to a new coaching regime and scheme during your senior year is not the easiest thing to do and that valuable time (4-5 games) was lost while the new regime evaluated him. this circumstance undoubtedly adversely effected his stat total for this past year. i still think that thanks are due to monty kiffen AND ed ogeron for improving his skill level and enhancing his talents and abilities, and that dan ultimately emerged as the best d tackle from the SEC this year. he is humble, uniquely extremely coachable, and has NO character or attitude flaws. i still think that playing in the SEC has afforded him consistently better talent to match up against and that heaven forbid if big dan had played his career in the big 12 or the pac 10. i still just hope that you and the scouts and management of the nfl will continue with objective research to make up for hype lost. thank you.

what do you have against dan williams? he has been double- and/or triple-teamed by florida AND alabama (the #1 teams in the country for 3 of the last four years), as well as the rest of the SEC (LSU has a recent national championship as well and dan played WELL in the SEC championship game that year against LSU), every game against them since his redshirt freshman year. add to that the fact that tennessee has a history of stockpiling, underplaying, and sometimes even inadvertantly devaluing GREAT talents to try to ensure that they played at least four years for the school. dan has a history of making players around him better (instead of vice versa), the highlight recordings for first round picks from TN jarod mayo and robert ayers could have easily been highlight recordings for dan, and the overall ranking for team defence for TN has been POSITIVELY effected every game that dan has started for his entire career there (even this past year while adjusting to a new regime and scheme and having the new regime lose valuable time evaluating him!). suh, mccoy, and even price (dan did get doubled by UCLA the two games that their teams did match-up) have gotten more pub, but time will show who is the BEST d tackle in this draft. heaven forbid if dan had played in the big 12 (my dream was for him to be a sooner) or the pac 10!!!! i just hope that you and especially the scouts and management of the nfl will continue with objective research to make up for hype lost. we’ve already shown who is the best d tackle from the SEC. thanks monty!!

Thanks a lot for your comment. I agree with you that they could use a CB or a NT and I had them selecting Terrence Cody however I believe that he ate his way out of the first round. So they may very well pick a CB or a DT but here is my thinking. At end right now they have Aaron Smith, Brett Keisel, Ziggy Hood and Travis Kirshke (three out of the 4 are 30 years or older). Personally, I don’t think any of those guys are great players, serviceable, yes but nothing out of the ordinary. I just think that Brandon Graham is a great player. He had a very good career at Michigan and he was named MVP of the Senior Bowl. Maybe they do go Dan Williams but if I had a choice between the two (as of 2/4/10) I would pick Brandon Graham.

With all due respect (and I do give credit to all of you guys who do this for we
fans), given their holes on the O-line and in their DB, not to mention NT, why
would the Steelers go for a DE (any DE, except Suh)?

There are six First Round quality O-Tackles and likely one or two Safties and
even CB Donovan Warren.

Dan Williams is even a better pick at #18 than your selection.

(Look at Iupati, one of the OTs, Earl Thomas or D. Williams to the Steelers in
the First.)
